At a glance

Johnstone Syer competed as a professional co-driver in international rallies in the sixties, seventies and eighties, all over the world and partnered some well known drivers of that era including Logan Morrison, Andrew Cowan, Brian Culcheth, Roger Clark, Tony Pond, John Wadsworth and Kenjiro Shinozuka.

Driving in " works " teams such as Rover, BMC, British Leyland, Opel, Peugot Talbot, Mercedes, and Mitsubishi, many successes were achieved including outright wins in Jamaica, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Thailand, Ivory Coast and , of course, Scotland.

In 1970, he and Brian Culcheth were runners up to Hannu Mikola on the London - Mexico World Cup Rally.

He competed 5 times on the Paris - Dakar Rally with Andrew Cowan in a Mitsubishi Pajero and they were second overall in 1985, the highest placed British crew ever.

His first event was in 1956 on a Dunfermline Car Club Sunday afternoon rally in a Morris 1000 with his brother, Bill Syer, and his last event was the 1993 London to Sydney Classic Rally with Andrew Cowan in the Hillman Hunter with which Andrew won the event in 1968.

That's five decades!
